Greyhound bus transfer?

Ok, i’m taking a bus trip from des moines iowa to joliet illinois. I’ve never done this before so i don’t know what really goes on, but i looked online and it says that it will take 10 hours and 10 minutes, but it would only take like.. five fours to get there if you drove it yourself. what makes it take so long? also, has an area that says “tranfers” and then under it it says “2″ does that mean i have to get off then get onto another bus? where do they usually stop to do this? Sorry if i sound stupid i just need to know all the details about it..
